MOTOR VEHICLE OPERATOR job - Department of Veterans Affairs - Augusta, ME





NOTE : This is a TEMPORARY position not to exceed one (1) year. This appointment may be renewed for additional service in accordance with Agency needs. Temporary positions do not offer health or life insurance benefits and may be terminated at any time before the expiration date. The appointment to a temporary position does not confer eligibility for promotion or reassignment to other positions or the ability to be non-competitively converted to permanent employment.

The Motor Vehicle Operator is required to maintain and operate knowledgeably all assigned vehicles including sedans, station wagons, mini vans, 8 passenger vans, an ambulance, an 18 passenger van (which requires a special (P) endorsement on their license), and a rubbish truck (which requires a Commercial Driving License of 26,000 lbs. or up to 32,000 lbs.). Also, other vehicles and maintenance type equipment (i.e. tractors, mowers, loader, dump truck, power brush, snow blowers and other equipment as required). This position is located in the Grounds & Transportation Section of Facility Management Service at the VA Maine Healthcare System, Augusta, ME. Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Exercise patience, consideration and good judgment while transporting patients;

  • Takes appropriate action in a medical emergency;

  • Aids patients in/out of the vehicle and loads/unloads wheelchair patients;

  • Performs minor vehicle maintenance on all vehicles;

  • Performs daily inspections of each vehicle and equipment prior to use;

  • Records a Trip Ticket for each transportation assignment;

  • Operates a variety of motor vehicles including sedans, station wagons, mini and passenger vans, ambulance, 18 passenger van, and rubbish truck;

  • Operates maintenance type equipment such as mowers, loaders, dump trucks, power brush, snow blowers and other equipment as required;

  • Plans routes to ensure safe transportation of passengers;

  • Uses map reading skills to reach unfamiliar locations;

  • Obeys all safety rules, regulations and traffic signs;

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

WORK SCHEDULE: Tuesday through Saturday, 7:00am – 3:30pm


DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.
