Patient Access Associate job - Inland Hospital - Waterville, ME

The Patient Access Associate is the first contact many customers have with Eastern Maine Medical Center and they influence the effectiveness of the customer’s encounter with the hospital.

The Patient Access Associate position is located either in Grant Tower or the Emergency Department. The Patient Access Associate is to complete the registration process for all outpatients and inpatients admitted to the medical center.

Admission will consist of patient interviews, on-line entry of information into a computer system; and signatures for consents and releases.

The Patient Access Associate is also charged with obtaining complete and accurate insurance information prior to the patient leaving the Emergency Room Department to allow for the timely billing of the patient’s health plan.

The Patient Access Associate is responsible for understanding the complexities of health plans and the relationship between health plans e.g., Medicare, MaineCare, Commercial Insurances, Blue Cross, Worker’s Compensations, and self-pay.

The Emergency Department can be particularly stressful.

The Patient Access Associate must participate in disaster preparedness efforts and maintain disaster preparedness skills.

The Patient Access Associate is responsible for understanding and using more than nine computer systems in order to work efficiently.

The Patient Access Associate is to have a

general understanding of their role in the revenue cycle.

MINIMUM EDUCATION REQUIRED:
Associates degree or other technical college education or the equivalent in work experience and continuing education. Medical Terminology 1 course completion/Anatomy & Physiology or have learned through work experience


EXPERIENCE
:

1-2 years in medical setting preferred, 1-2 years work experience with personal computers and customer service.


OTHER SKILLS REQUIRED:
Verbal and written aptitude for adequate communication with the general public, physicians, physician office staff, Registration staff, and other healthcare professionals.

Must demonstrate the ability to work well with others and to work independently without direct supervision.

Must exhibit a caring attitude toward patients, co-workers, and other customers.

Ability to handle multiple priorities successfully.

Position requires close attention to detail.

Must present in a professional manner.

Typing skills of 35 wpm with a general working knowledge of Windows and Microsoft Office.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

This position entails extensive customer service and phone utilization, visual and auditory acuity, finger-wrist repetitive motion, and utilization of a computer/keyboard.

Ability to lift heavy boxes of paper and push wheelchairs with patients.


WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
Seated for long periods of time, standing and walking.

Based in a highly stressful emergency department, subject to a wide variance in temperature due to proximity of an exterior door.

Patient contact will involve dealing with persons in compromised status including trauma, infectious disease, crime victims, and psychiatric patients.

High noise level due to multiple phones, conversations, public, and overhead paging
