Lab Courier job - Inland Hospital - Waterville, ME
Versed in most areas of laboratory office operations.
Transports specimens from client tot the laboratory as needed.
Must be neat, well groomed, courteous, and considerate of customer needs.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND WORK ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES
Performs any other essential duties as assigned.
Delivers laboratory reports for physician offices and sorts incoming mail paying attention to special deliveries that may need to be made (i.e. O.R. reports).
Completes clerical work as needed for proper processing.
Works well with others and makes every effort to contribute to a positive working environment.
Receives no major moving violations.
Knows how to use a Blood Spill Kit.

PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT
Exposed to all patient specimens including human waste, all types of body fluids, including HIV, HBV positive blood.
Unpleasant smells may be encountered.
Exposure to dangerous substances is sometimes unavoidable.
Workload, long and irregular hours and patient client expectations may create a stressful working environment.
PHYSICAL CRITERIA/EFFORT
Work involves sitting/driving approximately 80% of the time.
Physical dexterity, vision and hearing are constantly required.
Bending, stooping, and walking required.
Occasional exertion handling supplies.
SAFETY
1.
Maintain a safe environment which includes knowing and understanding hospital and departmental policies and procedures.

Report and directly address identified environmental hazards when appropriate.

Report and directly address violations of patient safety policy and/or protocol when involved or observed.
OCCUPATIONAL RISKS
Failure to follow SOP could result in needle sticks, falls on slippery floors, injuries form lifting, injures on instrumentation.
Exposure to blood and/or body fluids.
Failure to follow safe driving practices may result in increase risk of injury.
PROBABILITY AND CONSEQUENCES OF ERRORS
Accuracy and alertness are most important when dealing with laboratory test.
Could cause dire consequences for patients through clerical errors.
Increase risk of injury or toxic spills could results from improper handling of blood or blood products or biomedical waste.
NUMBERS SUPERVISED
This is a non-supervisory position.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS FOR THE JOB
Must have good communication skills.
State of
Maine
driving license with no major infractions for the last three years.
Must be willing to work in all environments with potential exposure to infectious materials.
EDUCATION
High School diploma or equivalent.
EXPERIENCE
Previous experience preferred, however not mandatory.
