This position is in the Sterile Processing Services (SPS) which includes 3 sections – decontamination, preparation and distribution. Duties include, but are not limited to:
- Correctly cleans and decontaminates reusable medical equipment (RME) and instruments used in the medical centers patient care units, clinics, operating room, endoscopy rooms and Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs).
- Follows manufacturers instructions for use (IFU) for cleaning solutions, mechanical equipment, and disassembly of RME.
- Correctly operates equipment including the ultrasonic cleaners, washer decontaminators, endoscope processing units and cart washer.
- After cleaning, inspects instruments and equipment to ensure gross contaminants have been removed.
- Completes equipment pick up rounds throughout the medical center to retrieve contaminated instruments and equipment.
- The incumbent is required to inspect for cleanliness and function, assemble trays, package or wrap and sterilize a variety of instruments and instrument sets using steam, vaporized hydrogen peroxide and ethylene oxide (ETO) modalities.
- Correctly identifies appropriate sterilization parameters required for sterilization of instruments outlined in the instrument manufacturer IFU.
- Correctly provides the Operating Room with medical surgical instruments, and equipment stocked on case carts.
- To distribute medical surgical instruments, and equipment, technicians must know the names of the different surgical instruments, and equipment including the trays and sets, and must understand, generally, how items are used in case the user refers to them by another name.
- Correctly stock, rotate and maintain supply levels in the SPS inventory. – – All items are maintained utilizing the first-in first-out (FIFO) concept of issue and receipt, and preserving package sterility and integrity.
- In the performance of official duties, the employee has regular access to printed and electronic files containing sensitive data, which must be protected under the provisions of the Privacy Act of 1974 and other applicable laws, Federal regulations, VA statutes and policy, and policies.
- The incumbent is required to comply with the surgical complexity requirements by being assigned on call hours duties, which start after regular working hours during week days (regular working hours are 0700 -1800) and during any weekend/holiday hours.
Work Schedule : Monday – Friday 9:30am to 6:00pm and on-call
