PHARMACY TECHNICIAN job - Sebasticook Valley Hospital - Pittsfield, ME

A. JOB PURPOSE:
  • Under supervision of a registered pharmacist the technician assists in providing effective, appropriate and safe pharmacy services. Responsibilities include providing medication, drug information and pharmaceutical services to patients, nurses, physicians and other hospital personnel.


B. JOB RESPONSIBILITIES (Essential Job Functions)

Participates in pharmacy orientation programs, training programs for pharmacy supportive personnel, pharmacy staff meetings and in-service educational programs.

·
Assists in maintaining the cleanliness and orderliness of the pharmacy.

·
Maintains and checks records accurately. Processes records of medications and supplies dispensed to patients, computes charges and enters them into the computer.

·
Receives inventory orders from suppliers and verifies quantities and screens medication expiration dates.

·
Assists Senior Pharmacy Technician in maintaining inventory of supplies and reorders them accordingly (including and not limited to office supplies, forms, and medications)

·
Assists Senior Pharmacy Technician in completing monthly outdating procedures

·
Assists in filling medication orders. Assists pharmacist in providing pharmaceutical care for patients of all age ranges. Must be able to identify and understand that there are dosage variations between age groups and know to consult with pharmacist if any doubts or questions arise.

·
Assist the Director of Pharmacy in the maintenance of the 340B pharmacy program in regards to lawful ordering, auditing, and distribution.

·
Demonstrates ability to calculate figures and amounts relating to dosage calculations when filling various orders.

·
Assists Senior Pharmacy Technician in orienting and training other pharmacy technicians, pharmacists, new employees, volunteers, and pharmacy students.

·
Packages unit doses according to hospital policies and procedures.

·
Responsible for re-stocking and basic maintenance of automated dispensing cabinets.

·
Prepares sterile compounded intravenous solutions and admixtures based upon hospital policy and USP Chapter guidelines.

·
Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety.

·
Performs other pharmacy related duties as requested or required.

·
Demonstrates ability to deal with problems involving several variables in particular situations.

·
Performs assigned quality control and regulatory activities on schedule.

·
Maintains professional, helpful and courteous relationship within the department and with other departments.

C. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:


Education: High school diploma or the equivalent. Must be at least 18 years of age. Holds or are attaining a pharmacy technician certification (CPhT) within 18 month of hire.


Experience: One to three years related pharmacy experience and/or training or graduate of certified training program/healthcare careers college preferred.


Training: Education in all age groups ranging from newborn to the geriatric population obtained either in school education, experience or subsequent training.


Licensure: Appropriate certificates or licenses required for the position. (Maine Requires Technician Registration Annually).


Preference given to those certified and with hospital experience.

Automated pharmacy systems.

Strong telephone aptitude.

IV Laminar Flow Hood (Vertical) – or willingness to learn.

Must be motivated.

Environment Demands/Exposure to Hazards:

Long periods of VDT exposure. Proper office ergonomic mechanics. Work may be repetative and should alternate to avoid injury.


Physical Demands:

Moderate lifting (15 – 44 pounds)

Lots of walking, standing, and sitting.

·
20/20 vision.

·
Hearing required to hear conversation, talk and listen on the phone.

·
Push a medication cart, (less than one hour).


Mental Demands:

Ability to work independently, make decisions and to make calculations correctly. Ability to work an environment that is stressful due to high level of work to be done with many interruptions.


Manual Dexterity Required:

·
Use of fingers required, with good dexterity. Able to open U.D. and bulk bottles. Able to type, write and tear paper reports.
