We have an incredible new opportunity in our Shanghai office for a Trading System Engineer, who will provide technical support to our trading team. We are in the early stage of growth in China, so you would join a small ‘start-up’ team which will drive our success in the region. We are looking for a special person to join us in this rare opportunity to turbo charge your career.

What you’ll do

In an environment where milliseconds are too slow, we need our systems to perform at their peak, all day, and every day. As a Trading Systems Engineer, you will work in the production environment where you are a custodian of the systems that drive our core business.

From the software that places orders directly to the market to the front-end trading applications, you’re in a unique position of having strong end-to-end understanding of how these components operate as one. You’re entrusted with delivering game-changing ideas and coordinating incident responses. Your goal is flawless execution on every occasion.

Taking the best of both worlds, you excel in taking real business problems and solving them with cutting edge technology.

What you’re like

You’re a technologist at heart and crave the challenge of learning how things work under the hood. You’re a solution-oriented engineer who enjoys solving problems and having a direct impact on the business. You want to work with systems end-to-end and you don’t shy away from intricate low level details. A critical thinker when it comes to troubleshooting and analysis, you have strong attention to details, great initiative and are always proactively looking to improve how things work. Teaching in Colombia: where have two months gone?

Time flies when you’re teaching English as a foreign language! Our intern Ashna has had the time of her life in Colombia and can hardly bear to leave…

I sit here writing my final blog pondering on how two months flashed by and how Christmas is just around the corner (sorry!)… I would love to have spent more time here in Colombia but at the same time I know that I will be back before you know it. Saying goodbye to Alex was very emotional. I appreciate that fortunately enough we all live in the same country, well sort off, so I know we will meet again but it is still disheartening to watch one leave. Reflecting on the times we spent together, the memories kept us strong. Sometimes the people whom we’ve known for only a short period of time have a bigger impact on us than those we’ve known forever.

LoveTEFL Colombia interns relaxing together on the beach
Then there were three! We planned to make a trip to Santa Marta… again! This time for the final time. Honest! It wasn’t the same this time round as the hostel seemed depleted from what we were used to, it was almost like a ghost town in there. We treated ourselves to the spa and spent the day getting pampered. It felt refreshing, so refreshing that we didn’t shower for about 24 hours! Abi and myself accompanied Janna to do the Minca trail again. It was good to know the tour guides still remembered us. Knowing that we knew what was to come ahead we were better prepared this time around.

LOveTEFL Colombie interns relaxing together
It was lovely to meet some new people and make more friends. I would recommend booking tours with either the hostel or a tour operator, as it makes it a lot easier to know where your going and to have meals included, as well as knowing your safe and in good hands. Unless, of course you’re hard core and prefer to explore yourself. It was the same as last time but we had to be a little bit more careful, we had a few trips and falls but thankfully we didn’t break any bones and were alive, just about!
Heading back to the hostel later that evening, I headed out to say an emotional final goodbye to a few friends that I had made in Santa Marta but other than that Tuesday night was pretty much a silent one and an early one to say the least.
Making it back to Santa Veronica in one piece the next day, I rushed to get ready to go watch a live football match at the Roberto Melendez Metropolitan Stadium, little did I realise there was hardly anyone at the stadium, it may not have been the best of matches but it was still worth watching a Colombian football match!

Playing football on the streets of Cartagena, Colombia
I had one last shot at surfing with Jose the instructor. Having booked a lesson early the following day, I think I managed to do better this time! I could be a surfer in no time! Shakhi on the other hand is a natural surfer on both counts she did great. We didn’t do much during the day but hung out with a few local friends by the beach in the evening. That’s our favourite spot, the beach! I surely am going to miss this place.
We had arranged to meet one of the students the next day and meet his family, they were lovely! I admire how reciprocal Colombians are. You may be an only child with no parents but you always have someone to lean on, whether it be the grandparents or the aunties and uncles or perhaps even the neighbours, it puts you at ease knowing they are happy with what they have and most importantly love, healthy and safe.

LoveTEFL intern with local COlombian child in Cartagena, Colombia

This bond lead to a friendship, so they knew we are always there if they need us. We rented bikes and they took us for a ride around the town of Puerto Colombia! I must say I’m not the best on bicycles, I’ve had bad experiences in the past but I think I did pretty well apart from almost riding over Abi’s foot and knocking her over! The students were in fits of laughter watching me ride a bike! I didn’t fall and hurt myself so I’ll say that if was a “smooth” ride.
I left my packing to pretty much last minute! I underestimated how long it would take but it didn’t take all night and I didn’t have much hand luggage which was the primary aim. Then the final goodbye party came along with our local friends on the beach!

Colourful bench and doorway in Cartagena, Colombia

It was sad knowing it was our final night in Santa Veronica with beautiful people that we’ve spent a lot of our time with but it wasn’t a final goodbye! Embrace yourselves Colombia as I’ve mentioned before and reiterating it again…we will be back!
Leaving was distressing to say the least, every step I wanted to take forward I felt like I wanted to take two steps back but knowing that someday I will be back, the steps forward were slightly easier to take.

My experience arriving in Thailand with LoveTEFL

Teaching English overseas is an amazing adventure – come with LoveTEFL Thailand intern Matt as he starts out in Ayutthaya.

On the morning of July 30th 2015, I left the UK behind for the start of a two month adventure on the other side of the world. My name is Matt and this will be the first in a series of blogs documenting my time in Thailand as a LoveTEFL intern.

Sixteen hours, four airports and three flights later I stepped out of Suvarnabhumi airport into a wave of Bangkok heat that takes you by surprise. I had just been greeted by LoveTEFL representatives and was taken straight to our hotel for the next few days in Ayutthaya.

Krungsri River Hotel, Ayutthaya, Thailand

Two things that struck me on the journey were the colourful taxi cabs and the amount of motorbikes on the road. Boy, there are a lot of bikes. The hotel was actually nicer than I’d been expecting, even from the pictures. I met my roommate and his best friend who were doing the internship together, and we set off for a brief exploration of our new surroundings. This included figuring out how to cross roads in Thailand given the traffic rules, or lack thereof. Throughout the day more interns trickled in and that night we all sat down in the hotel restaurant for our first meal together.

Orientation sessions in Ayutthaya, Thailand on the LoveTEFL Internship

Our first full day in Thailand began with a whole morning of orientation with LoveTEFL’s in-country team. We did an icebreaking exercise to give us a chance to learn about our fellow interns (there were about forty of us). We discussed safety, including details like how best to get on and off a motorbike and how we shouldn’t worry about the dogs that you see just roaming the streets. We were told what to expect of our time here and were given some primers on Thai customs and way of life. We were given a fun lesson in some basic, must-know Thai language rules and phrases. After lunch, we all met up and piled into a convoy of songthaews (a vehicle you see a lot of in Thailand with two rows of seats along either side of the back of a truck) and were taken to the ruins of a temple in old Ayutthaya city. Our tour guide showed us around and then let us wander the site on our own for a while where we got to know each other a little more (a lot of names to remember!) and take a whole lot of photos of the beautiful structures. Our songthaews took us back to the hotel to rest for a bit (being out and about in the middle of the day in that heat can leave you drained) and then we prepared for dinner.Thai barbecue meal, Ayutthaya, Thailand

Meeting outside the hotel our convoy of songthaews, now blasting a mix of western and Thai dance music and flashing coloured lights, took us to a restaurant for dinner. Being driven through the city streets at night through the crazy Thai traffic with the loud music, bright lights and the smells of food being cooked in the streets is just so surreal, and that was the moment that I realised that this is it, I’m really here and doing this, and it feels great! At the restaurant, each table was provided a pit of hot coals and a metal dome that sits on top which… you know, it’s kinda hard to explain, just image search “Thai barbecue” and you’ll see what I mean! We were given a tray of raw meats, seafood and vegetables to cook ourselves however we liked. It is a unique and communal eating experience which I enjoyed several times during my time in Thailand. After a return trip to the hotel in our party wagons, we decided to all go to a reggae bar just down the street for some drinks. The bar was an instant hit with us, so laid back and cool, it was a great way to end the night.

A songthaew in Ayutthaya, Thailand

The next morning, all the Kanchanaburi-bound interns set out on the long bus ride to that city, and after saying our goodbyes, that left eight of us in Ayutthaya. After a short meeting to discuss our assigned schools and the area around which we were all going to be placed (a town called Sena), we had a free day and so we piled into a songthaew and set off on a tour of some of the temples around Ayutthaya. So many beautiful buildings, Buddha statues, a marketplace, elephants… we saw a lot before the heat wore us down and we went back to the hotel. Dinner that night at the hotel was an absolute feast, and we followed it up with another trip to the reggae bar. The next day it would be our turn to go to our schools, and the work would begin…

Teaching in China: change is good

Teaching in a country like China can be full of surprises and challenges. Here, our intern Matt gives his insight on how to make the most of your adventure.

Before I begin, I need to say that I am full of love for China, and coming here is the best thing I’ve ever done, there’s a soul about the place that makes me happy to get out’ve bed in the morning. Not soul like New Orleans or Latin America, but the kind’ve soul that comes from a place that is full of great people, great culture and great amounts of weird food, but the soul is slightly throttled by the feeling that the boss might turn up at any second.

After being born in Northern Ireland I have been blessed with the surprising ability to become slightly tanned, despite eighty percent of my fellow Irish and Northern Irish people reacting to the sun like a Bulbasaur at ends with a Charizard. So the sun has been kind to me, and I feel some tremendous benefits and optimism that comes from also being cursed with seasonal affective disorder, so I can alternate every day feeling totally up and down.

My mother told me that in travelling the world to teach and study martial arts, the major benefits would be that I would become more open minded, happier and less racist. (Brushing over the fact that my mother just called me a racist) I’ve found this to be true, to an extent. Racism-wise, I have realised that I have really started to hate ‘westerners’. Coming over here, filling up Hutongs. I have, on the bright side, started to find a different branch of people who are here that don’t spend their days sitting around complaining about China (unfortunately is common and could easily ruin your experience if you let it).

LoveTEFL China interns sharing a meal of Peking duck in Beijing

I have also found people from America and from the UK and Ireland, and some unearthly fascinating people from Mexico that have all arrived in Beijing for some beautiful version of the same dream. If love is the happiness of others being directly associated with your own, then these are Men and Women that I can comfortably claim to love – devoid of hyperbole – within two weeks of knowing. I’ve had conversations with people who I never would’ve spoken to that have truly changed my life or at least my perspective on something in it.

China (or at least Beijing) is a glorious place to be and there are so many interesting things to witness and experience. Any cynicism you may download into your brains from reading this comes from the concentrated effort one has to make to avoid falling into a common trap. The trap of spending all of my time with the kind of people I would meet back home in the kind of places I was sick of going to. There are things that shouldn’t exist like the archery bar which is exciting, fabulous hidden treasures like Miles that is the best cocktail bar, bar none, that I’ve been in. Family run shops selling Ocarinas and Mojitos and weird but beautiful meat wrapped in weird but beautiful carbs. The opportunities for adventure in China are never-ending and the people are so happy that you are interested in their culture that they will spend ages explaining things to you that they can’t possibly find interesting.

LoveTEFL China intern Dave teaching his fellow intern Eric to play guitar at their intern house in Beijing, China

A strange reaction of being isolated from anyone you really know all of a sudden has different results on different people. Sometimes they party all the time, drink themselves sociable (or insensible) or wander off on their own and gain a disproportionate amount of bragging rights in their own mind of relatively minor decisions, like buying a bamboo steamer. I fall into most of these but the one that stands out is my ability to fall in love with about 30 percent of any given room. The decision to come abroad and to teach has a fabulous way of filtering out all the people who wouldn’t do this, and leaving out the kinds of people that would.

This tea strainer of great human beings are often escaping a dead end job, or escaping a broken heart and wanting to see what the world has to offer other than the tedium of home life. Sometimes a much more beautiful decision has inspired them to come here and they do it in honour of someone who can’t do it themselves. Your fellow teachers that are not necessarily from the company you travel with or necessarily from your school, are almost always going to be intelligent or have a high degree of emotional intelligence making for great connections or conversation one way or another.

If anyone is to find themselves wanting to teach and are scared, then get your brain to tell your heart to shut up and then pay for everything on LoveTEFL and get on a plane, your life will be different, sometimes better sometimes worse but it will change. If you aren’t happy now then as a bus driver will always tell you, ‘change is good’.

Meet the LoveTEFL Travellers: Charlie, Cambodia

What kind of person would leave their life behind for two months to travel across the world teaching English? Our intern Charlie shares his perspective.

Today, we’re catching up with our TEFL intern Charlie, who recently finished his two months’ teaching experience in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Check out the exciting blog Charlie kept on his travels here, and read on to find out what drew him to the Cambodia Internship and – most importantly – what he got out of it.

Hi Charlie, thanks for taking five with us! First up, tell us a bit about yourself.

Hi! I’m Charlie, 23 (I had my birthday on my last day teaching here!) I’m from Hackney, North-East London, so I’m a city boy! I have an older brother who works for a magazine publishing company. My best party trick? I can do the Rubiks Cube in 1 minute – what a geek!

LoveTEFL intern Charlie Adams with his students at school in Phnom Penh, Cambodia

What do you do in your spare time usually?

I love playing various sports, going running, socialising with my friends and playing Fifa!

What’s your education history up to this point?

I went to the University of East Anglia (UEA) to study Physical Education and graduated in 2014 with a 1st class degree. I went to one PGCE interview at London Met Uni (to study Secondary PE), but I turned down my offer due to not being 100% sure if it was what I wanted to do. Instead, I worked in London for a while, then went to the French Alps and worked for a ski company doing childcare bits and bobs (and teaching myself to ski) for 5 months.

LoveTEFL interns cliff jumping in Cambodia

What drew you to TEFL?

I have always thought I wanted to teach, but wasn’t sure whether to go into secondary or primary schools to work. Coupled with my desire to travel and learn new things, I figured that TEFL teaching would be a great excuse to do something useful, while exploring new places.

How do you feel about the overall experience provided by LoveTEFL?

I think that the TEFL course was very thorough, and provided me with useful notes to revisit while teaching. However, I also feel like more emphasis should be provided on lesson planning, as this was something I and others struggled with. It’d be good to have a bit more insight on what makes a great lesson before we start teaching.

Additionally, it’s important to note that you’ll be meeting LoveTEFL’s partner company in-country. Nutty’s Adventures will be running things once you touch down,  and this wasn’t necessarily clear (that said, the Nutty’s team are great).

LoveTEFL Cambodia interns on a boat trip in Sihanoukville

What was your favourite aspect of the internship?

I really enjoyed immersing myself in the culture and I’ve learnt such a lot. The kids are incredible, and their attitude towards learning is inspiring. It was definitely the children that made my teaching experience so enjoyable. I was fortunate enough for my birthday to fall on my last day teaching, and this was really special. The teachers spoilt me rotten, and my students were so kind and thoughtful on the day – it was amazing!

What challenges did you face? What advice would you give to a would-be traveller?

Ordering food can be a challenge, particularly when places (often street food) don’t have menus! My advice would be don’t be afraid to point – as long as you do things with a smile, you won’t seem rude!

LoveTEFL teachers at school in Cambodia

I found controlling some classes difficult. Try to use the same method of gaining students’ attention, and be consistent. The best way to get their attention is to distract them in any way possible! I’ve even heard of a teacher getting students to pose for a photo while sitting in their seats and looking forward! Another great technique is songs; sing a song with your class, and then get them sitting down silently straight after.

Stickers are also excellent. It’s amazing how many students suddenly volunteer to take part in role-plays just so they can get a sticker! Similarly, some teachers used a star stamp that they’d stamp on the hands of students.

LoveTEFL Cambodia intern Charlie Adams with his class in Phnom Penh, Cambodia

 What’s next for you?

I didn’t rush into travelling all around the country during the internship, because I have the time to do it now. I’ve so far visited (since the internship ended) Kampong Cham, Kratie, Mondulkiri, Ratanakiri and Siem Reap.

Next, I plan to head back to Phnom Penh and look for a job – maybe back at my internship school.

Thanks for your time speaking to us today, Charlie – we’re really pleased to hear you enjoyed your internship. All the best with your future travels, and good luck landing that job in Cambodia!
