Taking a breather from TEFL teaching: Battambang!

Our TEFL interns make the most of a long weekend with a trip to beautiful rural Battambang for a tour of the bamboo railway and bat caves!

Our schools were closed for the Water Festival for a week so we decided it was time to head over to the famous Siem Reap, the home of Angkor Wat. We had already visited here previously on our SE Asia trip so we didn’t visit the temple again as its quite pricey. We used this time to take a breather from teaching and stay at a secluded hotel with a pool whilst everyone else toured Angkor Wat. That’s one of the great things you’ll find out here, it’s very cheap! You can find four star hotels for $15 a night if you do your research on accommodation websites. We both feel it’s good to give yourself a break from being a ‘budget backpacker’ sometimes and look back at your experiences and breathe in the luxury of hot showers and a pool. Siem Reap is very touristy as it attracts people from all over the world for Angkor Wat and so the tourists are condensed in a relatively small area – most can be found on Pub Street to let off some steam and to rehydrate after a day in the scorching heat exploring the many temples.

Cambodia TEFL interns on the bamboo train track in Battambang, Cambodia

After a few days we all got a three-hour bus to Battambang, west of Siem Reap. We all had not a clue what to expect and had trusted the recommendations of friends in Phnom Penh and we had heard a couple of reviews from fellow travellers we’d met so we gave it a shot. It has a sleepy town feel to it with interesting colonial buildings which gave the town a European atmosphere with Battambang evidently having had a huge French influence. The local people were incredibly warm and welcoming (of course, this is Cambodia) and offered directions when we took a few wrong turns whilst cycling around. We all visited a Bamboo train which was a great laugh – the train has been running for over 60 years and was initially used to move supplies around the villages but is now used for tourists. The ‘train’ was actually a man navigating a bamboo slack with a motor probably off a motorbike and when trains were approaching from the opposite direction on the only track, we all simply got off and the man dissembled the clearly fragile framework and then we reassembled and headed at break neck speed for about 5 miles through the rice fields.

Cows walk along a road in Battambang, Cambodia

The bat caves were our last stop here, and they didn’t disappoint. An incredible sight where we saw millions of bats fly out during sunset for forty minutes straight. We would highly recommend Battambang. A small town that is overlooked by most tourists but with plenty to offer and surrounding places to visit.

How to spend a quiet weekend in rural Cambodia

LoveTEFL Cambodia intern Lauren takes advantage of a quiet weekend during her time teaching English in Cambodia by journeying to rural Kampot.

We have just arrived back in Phnom Penh after a memorable weekend in Kampot – a picturesque, small town located on the south coast of the country. It’s full of natural beauty with the famous Bokor mountain just a few miles away and a river running through the middle of the town.

Kampot salt plains in Cambodia

We had three full days here to explore. We had high expectations of Kampot before arriving after hearing fellow travellers experiences we had met in Phnom Penh. It didn’t disappoint. On our first day we arrived with a few of the other interns and decided to ask a tuk tuk driver to be an unofficial guide and take us around the town and beyond for a few hours so we could explore. We visited salt plains which were truly spectacular, and after the traffic in Phnom Penh, we all appreciated even more the tranquillity and the fact we seemed to be the only people for miles and miles. Our view of high rise buildings at the school were swapped for mountain ranges that enclosed the plains and was an impressive back drop.

Cambodian fishing village just outside Kampot

Our next stop was to local fishing villages that were strangely situated off a main highway with wooden huts that housed small communities. Our (unofficial) tour guide explained how the fishermen risked their lives to provide for their families and if they accidently entered Vietnamese or Thai waters would be shot at and all of their catch confiscated. Our visit was short as we felt that we may be imposing but we were all grateful for the slight insight into the fishermen’s lives. To finish the day off, we headed back into town and drank a few Angkor beers and took advantage of the French influence on the local cuisine with eating crepes whilst watching the sunset over the river.

LoveTEFL interns with a Cambodian fisherman at a local fishing village near Bokor mountain

The following two days, we rented scooters and drove up Bokor mountain which took a good two hours to get to the summit. Waterfalls, panoramic views over Kampot and vast empty roads to speed up were the highlight of the mountain. A serious amount of concentration was needed to ride down when the temperamental SE Asia weather came into full force, with torrential rain hitting us, making visibility non-existent and the roads suicidal. All the interns agreed that it was a challenge that definitely came with a huge dose of adrenaline and most of the interns rented scooters the following day.

A relaxing day was needed to finish off the weekend so we all made our way to Arcadia, which was a hostel on the edge of the Mekong River that had water sports and wooden structures that they had built with the purpose for the most daring of travellers to jump in from. Some of us decided to kayak for a few miles down the river where we found secluded beaches, and little communities dotted along the river the further we travelled. We all found ourselves lying in a hammock taking in the views of the countryside at some point, exhausted and planning ahead for the next school week.

Beach break at the end of my Venezuela Internship

LoveTEFL intern Stephen has been teaching English in Venezuela for the past 2 months. The group spent their final week at the beach in Playa Colorada.

So here I am sitting in Barcelona (there’s also a Barcelona in Venezuela) airport, getting ready to say goodbye to the LoveTEFL internship experience and carry on my travels by myself. I’m waiting on a flight to Caracas where I’ll spend some time with friends then get a bus back to Mérida.

We have just spent six days on a beach called Playa Colorada which is about an hour to the East of Barcelona in North-Eastern Venezuela. We had a Christmas party there and just relaxed on the beach. It was another new experience but those are becoming normal here in Venezuela. The temperatures hovered around 35 degrees which was a very surreal Christmas experience but one I’ll never forget.  The Jakera crew have their own camp in Playa Colorada where they accommodate students and give them Spanish lessons in exchange for volunteer work in the local community. The village is very poor and the locals really do have very little. It was a real eye opener to see what conditions some people have to live in and has made me even more grateful for my upbringing back in the UK.

LoveTEFL interns on the beach at Playa Colorada, Venezuela

On Christmas Eve (the day they celebrate Christmas here in Venezuela) Jakera organised events for the local children at the ‘Jakera Club’ setup. One of the interns dressed as Santa and the rest of us as his trusty elves. We then staged a dramatic entrance to the club where the kids were gathered and each of them received a gift from Santa. Most of them won’t be getting anything on Christmas so to see the sheer joy in their eyes was one of the most heart warming things I’ve ever witnessed. It gave me real motivation to do something similar and help out more impoverished communities.

Children at the Jakera community centre in Playa Colorada, Venezuela

That evening Jakera threw a wild Christmas party with insane amounts of food and alcohol. I probably don’t need to explain the carnage that ensued! The next few days were spent recovering and relaxing on camp and the beach.

For me this chapter of the adventure is over but LoveTEFL and the internship proved to be the best possible gateway into South America. If you’re unsure on how to plan your travels and want a base to start at for a couple of weeks, or just want a short break to South America then I couldn’t recommend this experience more. When you read online about Venezuela on the official UK government sites, the foreign commonwealth or even most tourist pages, you will read mostly negative things. I urge you to not take these seriously or let them scare you away from the country. The Venezuelan tourist industry has really suffered because of this and it’s rare you bump into another foreigner. I can truly and honestly say to you that if you come here with some common sense and a level head then you’ll be absolutely fine. Venezuelans are among the nicest and most welcoming people I’ve ever come across and I think it’ll be tough to match the welcoming I’ve had here in my future travels.

Venezuela interns with local children at Playa Colorada beach resort, Venezuela

As for me, I’ll be staying in Venezuela until my visa expires at the end of January because I love the country that much. I then plan on travelling to Carnival in Brazil for February and afterward settling down to teach English in Colombia for a few months. Venezuela has already won a special place in my heart and I can wholeheartedly promise that I’ll be making a swift return as soon as possible.

TEFL in Thailand: touching down in Bangkok

Our intern Jasmine-Leann has touched down in Thailand for her TEFL internship. Come with her on a journey from Khao San Rd to the classroom!

“Errmm right, okay, how do I? Where should I? Oh my goodness. No I don’t want to see a ping pong show. Excuse me. Thank you.” Welcome to 90% of my thoughts in Khaosan road in Bangkok. An assault on the senses might just be an understatement. I have never seen such a place like it! Or smelt a place like it for that matter.

Khaosan Road is a hub for British, Australian and Germans to have a good time; an abundance of alcohol, stalls selling scorpions and cheap clothes. A brilliant night out! After two days of getting my feet on the ground and recovering from my flight journeys I was soon on my way back to the airport to meet other eager interns and begin our journey.

Thailand intern Jasmine-Leann on arrival in Thailand

After being greeted by our in country team in the beautiful lobby of our hotel we were given the afternoon to be free, rest and freshen up before dinner. But lo and behold, after a few days of being adventurous with foreign food the worst had happened. Being typically British and having a stomach as weak as a piece of cotton I resorted to making the bathroom my new home. As humorous as this may sound, food poisoning is not just to the effect of the rear, it is a whole body experience. After being taken to the hospital with an in-country team member and my room mate, I was seen to so quickly and with the upmost care. I cannot speak more kindly of the Thai hospital and their staff within. 3 days of solid sleep and I was right as rain again. So do not panic my friends, if you end up in a sticky situation it will not be the end of your trip!

Thailand TEFL students greet their teacher ona school day

I finally joined the school a day late and was greeted by an abundance of children outside the car eagerly waiting my arrival with the biggest smiles on their faces.

It is refreshing to be greeted by smiling faces every single time you step outside the door. And trust me it is, every, single, time. We are luckily enough to be housed on the school grounds and on the doorstep of the playground. Thai schools enforce only a positive attitude with lots of smiles and the children being the number 1 priority. Everyone is so unbelievably grateful to have us here, we are being given gifts daily by the teachers and students and they are trying their best to make sure we are comfortable and happy.

LoveTEFL intern Jasmine-Leann with her students in Thailand

I feel I finally may be doing some good with this job, investing in my karma and god forbid… enjoying the workplace, instead of constantly working towards metrics that we insist on living by in our modern day society: “How much did I earn today? How much do I weigh today? How much free time do I have today? What size dress is that?” The only quantity I have to live by is the level of fun in my classroom.

As I walk surrounded by happy children all desperate to just high five and hug me shouting “MORNING TEACHER MORNING TEACHER” I feel I may not experience that typical “Monday” feeling this week. And how refreshing it will be.

Touching down to teach in Cambodia: my experience

Lauren & her boyfriend are getting into the swing of teaching English in colourful Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Keep up with her TEFL journey here!

My boyfriend and I booked a flight to South America in March 2015 with the intent to head to Lima, Peru for a month of travelling before trying to land a TEFL teaching job in Santiago, Chile. Our first step on the TEFL road was to purchase a 120-hour online course with an additional 20 hours of practical classroom training. Even with the best intent and driven with a passion that had lasted for as long as we could remember, we were unsettled to think of ourselves in only a short amount of time being a paid teacher without previous teaching experience. We quickly reviewed our itinerary and booked onto an internship for eight weeks in Cambodia, along with a change of flights that enabled us to fly to SE Asia and then continue on to South America after the internship finishes.

Street view in Phnom Penh, Cambodia

We are two weeks into the internship and are still feeling remnants of being overwhelmed with being a TEFL teacher but with the support that we have received from the in country co-ordinators, we have managed to begin to feel in control. The internship already has proved to be the best decision that we have made and a vital part in our learning. There are so many questions that family and friends ask when I call back home, What food do you eat? Where do you live? What are the people like? all of the questions that rattled around our heads when we tried to envisage our life in Cambodia. Our accommodation is on the school grounds at an International school, however George and I actually teach in a different branch which is located about a twenty minute tuk tuk drive in another part of Phnom Penh. We both feel that our experience here is enriched by living in a suburb of the city with locals and getting to see the same friendly faces every day.

LoveTEFL travellers in Cambodia

There is a sense of community that is evident in the men in the street playing cards, to the lady who sells us our morning coffees from a road side eatery, who always remembers that we want no sugar and a little milk. Here we have begun to realise that the small things really amount and we have instantly valued them more, having never lived in a developing country. The food here is a juxtaposition of exotic to (honestly) quite boring. The staple of the countries cuisine is rice and the second is noodles which after eating for breakfast, lunch and dinner can become somewhat painful to eat. We have a toaster in our room so after our 5.30am alarm we try and force a piece of toast down and George normally buys street food for a mid-morning snack which in Cambodia is best to find somewhere that is popular with the locals.

Our feelings after a few days observing Khmer teachers and teaching a handle of lessons is that the teaching part is surprisingly the thing that we have quickly grown accustomed to. The factors that we are finding the most difficult is the bureaucracy in Cambodia; we were told in our orientation to have a ‘cool heart’ and the Cambodian way is to smile even when there is tension. The culture differences here in comparison to the West are vast and it may take a little longer to settle into the Cambodian way of managing things a little longer than we expected.

Wildlife spotting in Los Llanos plains, Mérida

There’s so much to explore around bustling Mérida in Venezuela. A trip to Los Llanos proves fruitful for our intern Stephen as he spots anaconda and more!

So the internship here in Merida is finally drawing to a close and I still can’t quite grasp how fast the time passes by when you’re having the time of your life. I already know that the decision to do this internship with LoveTEFL was among the best in my life and it has already opened several new doors for me. It has also provided me with a teaching experience which has made me definitely consider it a career option. At least for the time being it will be a great way to earn some cash to fund my further travels.

We have recently arrived back from our last trip here in Merida and it entailed a 4 day excursion to Los Llanos which is a sort of savannah like region to the east of Merida. Los Llanos translates to ‘the plains’ and I honestly felt like I was in a greener Africa. The wildlife and general experience topped the lot here in Venezuela and that is certainly saying something. You’ll never have such an incredible time and get such value for money as in Los Llanos. It’s something you’d be completely stupid to miss out on visiting Merida.

Los Llanos (the plains) in Mérida, Venezuela

Although I say a 4 day excursion, it was actually a 2 day tour and the other 2 days were spent driving to our camp and back. It was a long way to drive in sweltering heat but what was to come made it more than worth it. On the first day we started off with a boat tour through Los Llanos. The wildlife was simply spectacular as we glided through the swamps literally in awe of everything around us. There were more species of birds than I could count and at least 5 caiman on every small beach on the river. For anybody not aware of what a caiman is, it is a sort of alligator species native to South America. We also caught some glimpses of the Capybara in the bushes which is the largest rodent on earth. It was bigger than a lot of puppies and I suggest you check it out on google because it was extremely difficult to get a good photo! After the exhilarating ride and a more than satisfying lunch cooked by a local ‘llanera’ (literally ‘plainswoman’) we went piranha fishing. It was a tiny pond where I honestly didn’t think there could be many piranha residing, but boy was I wrong!

The jaws of a piranha held in the hand of an explorer in Los Llanos/

We were a group of 10 and between us I think we caught about 15 piranhas. They really are as vicious as the movies and you have to be really careful when unhooking them from your rod. I still can’t get over how such a small fish can have such razor sharp teeth and be capable of devouring a human being. After an exciting day we all crashed early in the camp which was down to a combination of being exhausted and not wanting to get eaten alive by the mosquitos.

The next day was the day we had been really waiting for because it was time to hunt for anacondas. It’s something I’ve always been fascinated by and have wanted to do since I was a child. Our guide spent about 10 minutes doing some poking and prodding in the marshes until he suddenly stopped and had a quick serious Spanish conversation with the local who came along. In a flash they wedged their sticks under the water and flung a 6 metre anaconda onto the grass in front of us. None of us could believe our eyes. We were welcome to pick it up from behind but the strength of it was incredible. It wasn’t planning to stick around and none of us were planning on annoying it any more than we had. It was there long enough to pick it up from behind and take some photos so that was enough for me!

A large anaconda lies on the floor in Los Llanos, Venezuela

Just seeing this incredible creature in the wild was something I’ll never forget. That afternoon was spent having a relaxing horse ride through the plains but in reality that wasn’t a patch on what we had experienced in the morning.

Los Llanos is an absolute must for anyone visiting the region and was the perfect way to bring our time in Merida to an end. We’ll be heading to Playa Colorada to spend Christmas for a week so no doubt there will be plenty to write about afterwards!
