Security Assistant job - Department of Veterans Affairs - Augusta, ME





The incumbent for this position serves as a facility PIV Identification Card Issuer; PIV Registrar; PIV Sponsor, as necessary; alternate front line, hands on Administrator/Operator for the facility wide Duress & Mass Notification systems; secondary co-manager of the VA Maine Healthcare’s Electronic Computer Access Request (ECAR) system. S/he may be assigned an array of administrative duties and various assignments in support of Emergency Management.

Duties of this position include, but are not limited to:


  • Printing, personalizing, issuing and terminating credentials for qualified applicants.

  • Confirming authenticity of card requests.

  • Verifying identification and/or identity proofing applicants.

  • Collecting cards due to damage and/or termination.

  • Verifying Special Agency Checks (SAC) and background investigation initiation/history.

  • Capturing fingerprints.

  • Capturing facial images.

  • Coordinating with Human Resources in the issuance/removal and verification of information connected with PIV badges.

  • Serving as liaison with the National PIV Help Desk, Homeland Security Presidential Directive (HSPD-12), and staff from VA Maine Healthcare Office of Information & Technology (OI&T) to troubleshoot and solve PIV equipment and other PIV related problems.

  • Monitoring PIV equipment for malfunctions, identifying malfunctioning equipment and following internal procedures to ensure equipment is properly repaired.

  • Creating zones, groups and function groups as equipment is added, relocated or needs changing in relation to Mass Notification and Duress systems.

  • Monitoring daily movements of equipment to rename devices to ensure an effective Police response to alarms.

  • Routing requests for additional access alarms or notification measures through proper channels to ensure physical security integrity for the entire facility.

  • Conducting PIV/Mass Notification and Duress Alarm training.

  • Assisting VA Police in the issuance of Physical Access Control permissions for door access.

  • Monitoring Duress and Mass Notification Systems for malfunctions.

  • Scheduling monthly testing of alarm systems.

  • Safeguarding sensitive data/information in accordance with Privacy Act and other applicable laws.

  • Serving as alternate purchase card holder.

  • Working independently to carry out steps for completing assignments in accordance with established office instructions.

Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 7:30am to 4:00pm
