Organisation Description

The Head of R&D is responsible for scientific support to acquire tech transfer projects with the already existing customer base mainly in the vaccine business and does joint visits with Marketing to assure scientific thought leadership recognition by our customers especially in China.


Job Description


Main areas of responsibilities include:
Leading the vaccine and biosimilar research groups including several scientists/engineers working on multiple development and tech transfer projects in Beijing (China) to include:
• Developing robust fed-batch and perfusion processes
• Tech transfer of development projects into manufacturing ensuring floor support for campaign success
• Maintenance of lab facility, equipment upkeep ? and technical improvements.
• Provide routine manufacturing support for yield trending and troubleshooting of late stage processes.
• Active group management with emphasis on employee development, continual improvement and training.
• Keeping abreast of changing technologies in the vaccine and biosimilar industry and the introduction of new methodologies to the development groups.
• Presentation of development activities at industry meetings and within the organization
• Management of development and tech transfer project budgets and timelines.
• Talent management of the UTCB R&D site
• Employee performance management in alignment with the senior management and HR
• Budget responsibility for the UTCB R&D site
• Assure project documentation in OPMT and Accolade
• Monthly reporting to the head of BM&T R&D


Person Specification


• Degree in engineering or life sciences with more than 10 years expertise (Biology, Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering, Bioengineering, Biotechnology): Ph.D with 4+ years in NA or Europe
• English (fluent written and oral) as well as Mandarin, German beneficial
• Excellent communication skills to align the UTCB R&D in the global R&D organization
• Ideally Chinese nationality
• Ideally expert in cell culture media development or biosimilar process development
• Expertise in biosimilar fed-batch processes
• Expertise in perfusion processes
• Must have hands on experience running cell culture and/or fermentation and have proven expertise in area of study.
• Demonstrated ability to design and execute scientific studies with technical excellence and relevant results.
• An understanding of manufacturing fit and tech transfer/scale-up experience is required.
• Management skills
