Relief Medical Interpreter - Chinese - Stanford Health Care - Palo Alto, CA

Under the direct supervision of the Manager of Interpreter Services, conducts medical and general interpreting/translating for the patient care staff and for patients and their families. Acts as a cultural consultant to staff and as advocate for non-English speaking patients/families. Assesses and monitor their patient's understandings of the information conveyed and keeps physicians/nurses informed as to the level of that understanding. Suggests referrals to medical staff, clinical social workers, patient relation staff, chaplains, and ancillary staff. Records services provided in patient chart.

Job Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities as well as possession of any required licenses or certifications is qualifying.

Education: Bachelor’s degree in a work-related field/discipline from an accredited college or university.

Experience:

Three (3) years of progressively responsible and directly related work experience

Licensure/Certification: None Required.

Ability to establish and maintain excellent client relationship, exhibit exemplary interpersonal skills and exercise sound judgment and professionalism in business and personnel matters.

Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive verbal and written information

Knowledge of cultural and perceptual factors that may have an effect on patient treatments and communications.

Knowledge of medical terminology

Ability to exercise calmness in stressful situations

Ability to work well with individuals at all levels of the organization

Ability to adjust communications to fit the needs and level of understanding of the receiver

Must possess high verbal and written skills in both English and the appropriate language.
