SUMMARY OF MAJOR FUNCTION


The CNA/Secretary performs basic direct patient care duties including secretarial duties under the supervision of a Registered Nurse.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND WORK ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES


1. Works in partnership model performing treatments and procedures as directed by the RN Resource Partner according to Inland Hospital policy and procedure. Makes rounds on assigned patients and anticipates patient needs.

2. Promotes a professional atmosphere on the unit through interactions with physicians, other nursing personnel and other members of the health care team.

3. Routinely checks patient care areas to restock supplies, organize bedside and provide patient assistance with activities of daily living and answers call lights in timely manner.

4. Acts as focus of communication on the nursing care unit regarding patient and staff location, activities and information. Uses pagers/cell phones to contact staff as appropriate.

5. Assists in and accompanies patient through the admission, transfer and discharge. Promptly reports any changes observed in condition or behavior of patient. Documents care provided on flow sheet.

6. Initiates, assembles and is responsible/accountable for all patient charts for all patients on the assigned unit as per hospital policy and procedures. Transcribes physician orders accurately and timely.

7. Records clinical data received form nursing staff and files diagnostic and laboratory reports in the appropriate patient records.

5. Maintains safe and clean environment. Reports equipment problems to director.

6. Establishes and maintains interpersonal relationships with patients, visitors and other hospital personnel, while assuring confidentiality of patient information.

7. Demonstrates the ability to adapt and adjust to changes in unit activity (census fluctuations, changes in patient acuity) and/or changes in hospital activity (floating to another unit).

8. Demonstrates the appropriate skills and ability to care for patients based on the age of the patient. Age groups may include infants, pediatrics, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients.

9. Assesses personal learning and skill development needs and seeks out educational opportunities. Attends educational, reads and initials all appropriate written communications. Attends 75% of staff meetings. (Per Diem staff is required to read minutes of the meetings and initial them.)

10. Is supportive of department and hospital’s goals and objectives.

11. Complies with Inland Hospital Hand Hygiene Standards.

12. Adheres to Inland Hospital Standards of Behavior.


PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT


Exposed to all patient elements, including exposure to Blood and Body fluids and other unpleasant elements. At times, long and irregular hours are necessary. Exposure to hazardous substances is, at times, unavoidable. Frequent multiple tasks and patient needs will be assigned in a rapid fashion by prioritizing life threatening situations and organizing the remainder of the needs.


PHYSICAL CRITERIA/EFFORT


Works involves standing and/or walking over 70% of the time. Prolonged periods of VDT may be necessary. There is moderate physical effort in positioning, lifting, or moving patients of various weights and body shapes, with or without assistance. Vision and hearing acuteness is required at all times. Repeated bending, squatting and stooping are necessary. The incumbent is subject to frustration and fatigue.


SAFETY


1. Maintain a safe environment which includes knowing and understanding hospital and departmental policies and procedures.

2. Report and directly address identified environmental hazards when appropriate.

3. Report and directly address violations of patient safety policy and/or protocol when involved or observed.


OCCUPATIONAL RISKS


Occupational injuries may occur from not following policies and procedures regarding (1) exposure to hazardous materials including blood and body fluids; and (2) potential injuries from sharp objects, violent individuals and physical environment.


PROBABILITY AND CONSEQUENCES OF ERRORS


Errors in practice can result in negative patient outcome. Probability is contingent upon individual practice. Poor performance will be addressed according to established progressive disciplinary policies and procedures of Inland Hospital and Maine State Law.


NUMBERS SUPERVISED


This is a non-supervisory position.


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS FOR THE JOB


Currently certified and registered as a Nursing Assistant in Maine . Must be fluent and literate in English. Ability to comprehend medical terminology. Ability to communicate effectively with a wide variety of clientele.


EDUCATION


High School graduate or equivalent and completion of a state approved C.N.A. program.


EXPERIENCE


Previous clinical experience in acute care nursing through student and/or past work history is desirable. Previous hospital or secretarial experience is preferred.


SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED

Annual mandatory continuing education requirements BCLS certification Basic Computer skills
