Secondary English Teacher - Shanghai - August 2016


The purpose of these roles and responsibilities is to outline briefly the tasks required of a secondary teacher in the secondary school. The school is trying to achieve high standards by responding professionally, sensitively and caringly to the needs of all their pupils. All teachers must demonstrate a standard of knowledge, understanding and skills of the curriculum taught in the school. All teachers must demonstrate an understanding of the wider curriculum and administration needs of the Foundation.


Purpose of the Job: To teach pupils within the school and to carry out such other associated duties as are reasonably assigned by the Administration. Job description: A secondary school teacher teaches one or more curriculum subjects to pupils Year 7 to Year 13. Teachers may use creativity, humour and imagination to develop schemes of work and to plan lessons in order to foster a healthy culture of learning within the classroom and to generatethe most effective interactions with pupils. Teachers encourage, monitor and record the progress of individual pupils, and devise and tailor resources accordingly, including technology. They must also keep up to date with developments in their subject area, new resources, methods and school wide initiatives. Teachers liaise and network with other professionals, parents and carers both informally and formally.


Have a detailed knowledge and understanding of the subject of English Language and Literature of the National Curriculum, IGCSE, IBDP, Secondary School curriculum and assessment guidelines. Be able to cope securely with subject-related questions which students raise and know about students’ common misconceptions and mistakes in their specialist subject(s). Has the ability to identify clear teaching objectives, content, lesson structures and sequences appropriate to the subject matter and the students being taught. Set appropriate and demanding expectations for students’ learning and motivation based on student targets and building on prior attainment and/or experiences. Identify students who have special educational needs and/or are gifted and talented, and know where to get assistance in order to give positive and targeted support. Where applicable, implement and keep records on Individual Education Plans (IEPs).


Ensure effective teaching of whole classes, groups and individuals so that teaching objectives are met, momentum and challenge are maintained, and best use is made of teaching time. Use teaching methods which keep students engaged, including stimulating students’ intellectual curiosity, effective questioning and response, clear presentation and good use of resources. Set high expectations for students’ behavior, establishing and maintaining a good standard of discipline through well-focused teaching and through positive and productive relationships. Assess how well learning objectives have been achieved and use this assessment for future teaching. Mark and monitor students’ class and homework, providing constructive oral and written feedback, setting targets for students’ progress. When applicable, understand the demands expected of students in relation to the National Curriculum, KS4 and KS5. Knowledge of how to select and make good use of books, equipment, ICT and other learning resources which enable teaching objectives to be met.


Know how to prepare and present informative reports to parents. Recognize that learning takes place outside the school context, is extended to the wider community, and provide opportunities to develop students’ understanding by relating their learning to real and work-related examples. Understand the need to liaise with agencies outside school. Establish effective working relationships with professional colleagues, such as, co-teachers, specialist teachers and associate staff. Most staff are required to serve as Form Tutors during their time at YCIS.


Skills/qualifications: A fluent English speaker that has obtained a Bachelor Degree and teaching certificate or license with excellent subject knowledge. Have a minimum of 2 years full-time teaching experience in a school setting.


An individual who is able to support and promote the school’s value, has passion for teaching students, who demonstrate rigorous approach in teaching different year levels and is responsive to the needs of students and demonstrate commitment to the best interest of the students and teamwork with colleagues. Additional experience or training in areas such as EAL, ESL, SEN, the US-based APs, and IB TOK is a plus.
