Job Title: Sales and Marketing Director for a new Australian Winery (based in China)
Location: Beijing or Shanghai, China
Winery: Tumblong Hills, Gundagai, Australia

We welcome applicants from outside the wine industry. Applicants already based in China will be given preference.


Tumblong Estate, the owner and producer of the Tumblong Hills brand, and potentially other wine brands. Tumblong Estate is fully owned by Danny Gilbert (founding partner of Gilbert + Tobin law firm), Wang JunFeng, and Handel Lee (Global Chairman and Senior Partner of King & Wood Mallesons law firm). Simon Robertson is Managing Director of the production side and planted the vineyard himself in 1998. Simon is based at the vineyards in Gundagai. Dan Siebers is Managing Director of the sales and marketing side, based in Shanghai. Dan was the first sommelier in China in 1999 and then the top executive at Summergate Wines starting in 2003. Summergate was/is the second largest importer/distributor in China. The winery’s importer is one of the largest import companies in China and also owns of the top domestic wine brand. They import 100% of all production by contract. However, they are new at the sale and distribution of imported wines and need a significant amount of support. The first release arrived in China in 2015. The website will be up by the end of January 2016.


MISSION: To create healthy and sustainable demand for all TE exports in excess of production (approximately 30,000 9L cases per vintage). The focus will be incentivizing distribution through quality of product and positive reputation of the brand. The stretch mission/dream is to eventually increase demand to the point where an allocation system is required to manage the sales.


REPORTING LINE: Reporting to the Managing Director Tumblong Hills China. The MD is responsible for a larger business that owns Tumblong Hills. As a result, the candidate should be capable to fully take over all sales and marketing issues within a few to several months.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES (include but not limited to):
A constant and proactive focus on building brand equity/legitamacy, one example is by entering local and international recognized tastings.
Both through our existing importer and direct:
· Create and support and incentives for distributors, trade, and end consumers
· Development, implementation and achievement of annual sales, marketing and distribution goals
· Develop, implement and execute sales programs and pricing strategy
· Develop and execute distribution standards in all distributor networks
Build and maintain close working relationships with the importer’s key staff
Assist the importer’s distributors to sell in Tumblong Hills products into their existing sales network
Monitor, analyze, and communicate with management/ownership on achieving monthly/quarterly/annual goals
Represent the company at marketing events, sales events, conferences, and community events as necessary
Total P&L responsibility for all direct sales to trade or end consumers:
Frequent travel required- up to 75% on the road in state and at industry events, 25% in office.
In the medium to long term, expand distribution beyond Mainland China by first creating a plan of attack and supporting travel budgets.


KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE/CHARATERISTICS:
Required Knowledge/Experience:
· Fluent in Mandarin Chinese, sufficient to watch the TV news in Mandarin. The importer and their sales network do not speak English.
· Bachelor’s degree (needed to get a work visa in China)
Preferred Knowledge/Experience/Characteristics:
· The ability to self-manage in an efficient and effective manner
· Australian citizen
· Wine sales and distribution experience inside or outside China
· Sales experience of any kind
· China work experience of any kind
· Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills
· Excellent communications skills, including public speaking
· In possession of a high level of integrity, confidence, and the ability to forge strong professional relationships quickly.
· The ability to drink alcohol
· Wine knowledge is desired but is also easily taught/developed.

HIRING PHILOSOPHY & COMPENSATION:
Our hiring philosophy comes from extensive HR research and experience. The compensation range is 15,000-40,000 RMB gross per month, with a maximum average monthly performance bonus of 5-10,000 RMB gross per month.
At the low end of the potential compensation range we expect the candidate to be fully capable in terms of abilities and personality, but lack any directly relevant work experience. At the high end of the potential compensation range we expect that candidate to be able to take over all Tumblong Hills Sales and Marketing tasks with 1-2 weeks of handover and require no additional training or support to reach their goals.
In other words, the less we have to teach, the more the compensation. How to sell in the China business environment is the most critical skill.
