Summer Academies - International Chinese Teacher - Middlebury Interactive Languages - United States

The Teacher is part of a community that creates an intensive four-week immersion study abroad program for high school students in the summer. Middlebury-Monterey Language Academy™ has become the gold standard for residential language and cultural immersion programs for secondary school students. Our International Residential Academies features the same renowned curriculum and programming as our US-based academies to provide students the experience to immerse themselves in the target language and culture. Teachers teach language and culture via the Middlebury Immersion Methodology. Classes at the Academy are designed to be task-based, interactive, learner-centered, and experiential for students. All courses and daily events are conducted in the target language.

Middlebury-Monterey Language Academy’s International Academies are planned in partnership with highly respected study abroad organizations. These strategic partnerships enable the International Academies to deliver Middlebury College’s renowned immersion curriculum in a safe, fun, and enriching environment. All instructional staff are required to participate in pre-season curriculum training to understand the Academy’s educational mission and vision and to master and implement the immersion curriculum by adopting and practicing the Middlebury Immersion Methodology. All staff and students adopt the Middlebury Language Pledge™, modified as needed for the student age group and language level so that a full immersion environment is created.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Plan and Prepare Responsibilities:
Participate in pre-season curriculum training led by the Program Director. Plan daily classes following the guidelines stipulated in the Academy Immersion Curriculum by working with the Program Director and fellow peers. Sometimes, team teaching is required.
Instruct and Support Student Engagement in Learning Responsibilities:
Implement the Academy Immersion Curriculum in daily language classes. Participate in experiential learning programming outside of the classroom. Teach effective, engaging classes and co-curricular activities in the target language Create a positive and safe community for learning. Create level appropriate lesson plan with clear objectives and implement it via a student-centered way. Include authentic materials in teaching and design effective authentic materials in teaching and design effective authentic material activities for learning. Include form-based inductive grammar learning activities in the classroom.
Reflect and Adjust Responsibilities:
Allow class observations and participate in coaching sessions conducted by the Program Director. Maintain an open-minded and positive attitude towards Program Director’s hands-on coaching and make instructional adjustments as needed to ensure classes are delivered via the Middlebury Immersion Methodology.
Professional Responsibilities:
Participate in Academy programming. Work to continually maintain a high-quality summer Academy through interaction, participation and visibility throughout the program. Support the Language Pledge. Communicate professionally and effectively to parents, students and other staff. Provide meaningful feedback to students. Work with other faculty, staff, and site administrators to create a successful Academy. Complete evaluations, reports and other documentation in a timely manner. Maintain comprehensive knowledge and utilization of the Academy policies and procedures to create a safe, supportive, rewarding environment for students and staff. Experience and Skills: Minimum Qualifications:
Current language educators Some K-16 teaching experience is required Several years of WL teaching experience at the secondary level is strongly preferred Native or near-native mastery of the target language and culture Additional Qualifications:
Formal training in second language acquisition, and/or world language pedagogy strongly preferred Ability to work as a team and maintain open-minded and positive attitude Ability to handle difficult moments/situations with patience and professionalism at all times Demonstrated interest in professional development.
ADDITIONAL JOB INFORMATION:

This is a residential position. All employees will be provided room and board. They will have two full days off during the 4-week session. Airfare will be paid for positions in China and Spain. Housing and transportation is not provided for family members.

Preseason training and work is required for this position.
